Through August 2017, there have been 852,825 housing permits issued this year for single- and multi-family homes — an increase of 7.7 percent over August 2016.
A recent report from the National Association of Home Builders analyzed U.S. Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction and Builder Permits data and found that between August 2016 and August 2017, 37 states and the District of Columbia experienced noticeable growth in the number of permits issued.
The report also found that 22 states and D.C. recorded permit growth of more than 7.7 percent, which is the national average for all building permits issued.
Montana had the highest growth at 31.9 percent, while Maryland had the lowest, at 0.7 percent. Only 13 states saw a decline in permits issued.
These are the 10 states that had the most number of issued permits as of August 2017. Combined, these 10 states account for 54.6 percent of all permits issued:
