It’s a been a good ride, but it’s over for older versions of Internet Explorer

Time to update your version of Internet Explorer!

Microsoft has announced that on Jan. 12, it will cease supporting older versions of its popular Web browsing software. Going forward, only Internet Explorer 11 will receive updates, while IE 8, 9 and 10 – which are still used by many consumers – will receive no support.

As Microsoft explained in its announcement, older versions of Internet Explorer will now be vulnerable to security threats.

“Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or technical support for older versions of Internet Explorer,” the company stated. “Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware, helping to keep users and their data safer.”

Do You Have to Update?

If you’re unsure of whether or not you need to update your version of Internet Explorer, hold tight – Microsoft will be launching a patch on Jan. 12 that adds a “nag box” to older versions of IE. It’s a little box that pops up in the browser urging you to update your software.
