When it comes to choosing where to live, safety has always been the top priority for potential buyers. And not just home safety: the state’s financial, road and workplace safety can greatly affect how likely someone is to live there.

In honor of National Safety Month, WalletHub analyzed the safety of all 50 states and the District of Columbia to find which states were the best and worst safety wise – and found that Massachusetts is the safest state to live in the U.S.

To calculate each state’s safety, Wallethub analyzed the states across twenty metrics, including Employment Rate, Fatalities Per 100 Million Vehicle Miles of Travel, Number of Law Enforcement Employees and Number of Assaults. These twenty metrics were then organized into five groups: Financial Safety, Road Safety, Workplace Safety, Natural Disasters, and Home and Community Safety.

Although each category had a different winner, the overall scores show that Massachusetts is the overall safest state to live in, while Mississippi is the overall least safe state. Below is a list of the top 10 safest states to live in:

1. Massachusetts

2. Vermont

3. Minnesota

4. New Hampshire

5. Hawaii

6. Utah

7. Connecticut

8. Rhode Island

9. Virginia

10. Maine

Amongst the top 10 safest states, Minnesota has the best financial safety, Massachusetts has the best road safety, Rhode Island wins workplace safety and Hawaii has the least natural disasters.
