Agent Snapshot: Betsy Herald, Sales Manager, The Charles Realty

What was your first job in the realty industry? Rental agent at Newman and Company, where I started in 1994.

Where did you grow up? Chicago.

Growing up, what did you want to be? An actress.

What do you do to relax when you’re stressed? Yoga, projects around my Vermont House, and I travel extensively, usually as far from Boston as possible!

If you could have lunch with a well-known figure (living or not), who would it be and why? I would love to lunch with Hillary Clinton. I think that woman has some interesting tales to tell.

Where is your favorite place to hang out? My home in Vermont, cooking and entertaining friends there.

What do you love most about the industry? The collaboration with other agents. I always say it’s a rare industry where your competition are your friends, and the only way to be successful is to be a team with them.

How do you distinguish yourself from the crowd of agents? I care. I actually never calculate a commission until after the closing. I have done that my whole career because I don’t want to think about the money, I want to focus on the client and making their dreams come true.

What is the most difficult aspect of your job? This is a very competitive market. You have to disappoint your clients often due to bidding wars. It’s hard telling someone they do not get their dream home.

Where do you go to network and meet new clients? I believe in being in the office. I think the clients come to you!

What has been your greatest accomplishment? 2o years at the same company.

What was the last good movie you saw or book you read? Who has time for movies? It’s the spring market!

What is your favorite restaurant? Sarma in Somerville.

Architecturally speaking, what is your favorite building in Boston? Trinity Church.

What kind of car do you drive? Audi.

Smartphone or paper? Paper.

What is your favorite city after Boston? Buenos Aires.

In 10 words or less, what is your advice for someone new to the industry? Work well with others.

What’s your favorite real estate iPhone/Android app? I don’t do apps!

Who are your favorite people to follow on Twitter? I don’t do Twitter!
